FAQ
Questions people actually ask
What does the whole course look like?
Four stages: JavaScript Foundations, Fluency, The Web, and Full Stack. Every module after the first ends with a project, and the last one is a complete app you build and put online yourself. Stage 1 is available now. The rest is on the way, one module at a time.
Is it done?
JavaScript fundamentals is complete and live. Full-stack arrives as modules ship, built the same way as this one. It is being built in the open, and it is not finished. See the changelog for what shipped recently. Changelog
How do the projects work?
Module 1 is all about the fundamentals, practiced through auto-graded exercises. Every module after that ends with a project that comes with automated tests. The tests check the minimum requirements, so when they pass, you know your project does what it should. You can always build more on top.
Do I need any coding experience?
No. Module 1 starts at your first line of JavaScript. If you've never written code, start at the intro chapter.
Is it really self-paced?
Yes. No cohort, no deadlines, no semester. Start when you want, stop when you need to, and pick it up where you left off. Progress is saved to your account.
What happens when I get stuck?
You always have a way forward. Hints are there whenever you want one, and taking one costs nothing, because nothing is scored. Any new word is explained when you hover over it. The rubber duck asks you to explain the problem out loud or by typing it, and nothing you say or type leaves your computer. The worked solution is always there too. If you reveal it, the exercise comes back later so you can write it yourself.
How is this different from freeCodeCamp?
freeCodeCamp is free and broad, and that is valuable. When you get something wrong here, you do not just see a red X. You get the specific mistake named: a misspelled property is undefined, arithmetic on undefined gives NaN, so your loop never ran. That is the difference you pay for after the first two chapters.
Can a self-paced course really get me a software engineering job?
I have taught more than five hundred students since 2011. Many of them now write software at places like Bloomberg, Microsoft, Datadog, and JPMorgan. They were hired before this product existed. I am not claiming it placed them. I am claiming that the way I teach has a track record, and this is that way of teaching, built to work when I am not in the room.
What's free, and what does founding membership include?
The first two chapters are free, with no card, and they always will be. Founding membership opens every chapter of Module 1. It also includes every module that comes after it, at no extra cost.
Do founding members get the later stages?
Yes. Founding members get every stage as it opens, at no extra cost.
What does it cost, and can I get a refund?
Alpha founding membership is $49, paid once, and open until October 31. Beta is $99, paid once, through the end of December. Alpha and beta members never pay again. If it turns out not to be for you, email me at hello@modernd3vforall.com and I'll refund you. You don't need to give a reason. A refund ends your membership, and you go back to the free chapters. See founding membership
Can I use it on my phone?
Not for the lessons and exercises. You write real code here, and that needs the real keyboard on a laptop or desktop.
Free to start. No card.
